A comprehensive, paid summer internship program for high school students in Metro Detroit, Flint and Pontiac that prepares students through community service, life skill lessons, team building and mentoring.

What we do

Each school team consists of 8 high school interns from the participating high school, two GM retirees and one college intern. Teams work together to develop their own community service projects in their school or neighborhood. Examples include, painting in their school, renovating athletic facilities or community parks and implementing a neighborhood recycling program.

In addition to service projects, the program exposes high school interns to career and educational opportunities and weekly life-skill lessons that cover important topics such as, money management, professional development and business etiquette. At the end of the program, high school interns present their achievements to General Motors senior leaders.

Profile of Dae’Sha Gooch

“I’ve received many opportunities from the GM Student Corps. After my first year in the program, I was named student of the month at my school, I got to attend the grand opening of Factory ZERO where President Biden spoke and I met Mary Barra, the CEO of GM. Since last summer, I feel like a way different person. This program helped me meet my best friends, learn about things I’d never heard of and gain confidence in myself.”

College Interns

During the program, GMSC college interns have the opportunity to make an impact in the Metro Detroit community while preparing for their future professional careers. College interns play a crucial role in the program co-leading community-focused projects while teaching critical life-skills and helping students determine next steps to achieve their post-high school goals. College interns are exposed to different career paths in GM through workshops and trainings, mentorship with a GM employee in their field of study as well as participation in a group project tackling real-world business problems.

“The GMSC program has been a foundational step in my career. I have always had a passion for helping people. Having the opportunity to be a part of the development of two groups of students, and being a small part of their success story, is priceless. My love for social impact and the empowerment of people and their communities has only grown since being a part of this program, and I will be forever grateful.”
