Can summer internships be valuable amidst a global pandemic? With careful safety protocols, modern technology and an innovative approach – they absolutely can!

GM believes the next generation of innovators can help us create a world with zero crashes, zero emissions and zero congestion, and every summer, we invite hundreds of interns to join our company to help guide that future.

Our interns have earned a reputation for providing valuable insights, challenging traditional processes and offering fresh perspectives. So this year, when the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted business operations worldwide, GM remained committed to investing in our future leaders. And our 2020 summer interns showed remarkable resilience and agility despite the challenges.

500 Interns Experience GM’s Company Culture In Person and Virtually

More than 500 interns worked in-person, digitally, or a hybrid between the two.  Undeterred by the nontraditional work environment, each made impactful contributions to GM. In manufacturing, marketing, engineering, communications and other critical areas, these interns provided valuable input that can help us transform the automotive industry for the better.

From the start, interns were immersed in GM culture, exposed to real business needs and challenged to make an impact across the company – from optimizing manufacturing efficiencies for future electric and autonomous vehicles, to supporting programs that foster diversity in STEM education.

“By diversifying my network, I was able to learn and gain exposure to other functions within the company.”

- Maria Schiavone, a propulsion systems interface calibration intern

In addition to learning new skills, interns are connecting across the organization through virtual coffee chats and trivia. In celebration of National Intern Day on July 30, many of the students worked together to create short videos showcasing their summer internship experience and commitment to the GM behaviors. While there was more physical distance between the interns this year, there has been no shortage of connections made and knowledge gained.
