GM made headlines at the 1990 LA Auto Show with the debut of the electric powered Impact concept car. The sporty two-seat coupe was the predecessor to the EV1 and was the beginning of an industry-wide effort to augment traditional automotive propulsion in order to reduce emissions and fossil fuel dependency. The Impact used technical and design experience from the SunRaycer electric car and featured an aerodynamic design that reduced wind resistance by more than a third. Powered by 32 lead-acid rechargeable batteries, the Impact's performance was comparable to many sporty cars of the time.
