The GM EVs and employees shaping an all-electric future with the Ultium Platform

GM is undergoing a dramatic transformation in pursuit of an all-electric future. In the two years since we announced our plans to go all-electric, we have:

  • Begun construction on two US-based battery manufacturing facilities and announced a third
  • Opened our first fully dedicated EV assembly plant, Factory ZERO
  • Prioritized equitable climate action to ensure the transition to all-electric is inclusive of communities disproportionately affected by climate change
  • Launched production of the GMC HUMMER EV Pickup1 and Cadillac LYRIQ2
  • Revealed several all-new EV models scheduled to enter production in the next few years, including the Chevrolet Silverado EV3 and Cadillac CELESTIQ4

We’ve embraced the necessary changes and challenges to make this swift progress possible—but, at the heart of this transformation, our greatest asset remains the same as it has always been: the talent, passion and dedication of our employees.

“ICE or EV, they all have seats, windshield wipers and many other common components. They will also spend the same amount of time in the paint shop. Our teams and employees are already successfully transferring their skills and passions from one vehicle category or program to another throughout the year and have been their entire careers.”

The people

Lizzie Moseman: Environmental Engineer

While the vehicles rolling off the assembly line may change, EV development and production uses many of the same skills, processes and technologies as traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles. In fact, GM estimates that EV manufacturing incorporates roughly 80% of the traditional ICE manufacturing process.

As an environmental engineer, Lizzie Moseman supports water compliance and operation needs by championing the latest technology and advancements in environmental best practices. The biggest opportunity she’s experienced since joining the team has been developing the environmental compliance standards for Factory ZERO as the first site in General Motors to undergo transformation to all-electric assembly.

Kris Sevel: Assistant Chief Engineer

The platform

Manufactured at Factory ZERO5 the GMC HUMMER EV was the first vehicle built on our Ultium Platform to launch. That same platform is the foundation of the Cadillac LYRIQ, which began rolling off the assembly line in Spring Hill, TN5, earlier this year. As Kris Sevel, assistant chief engineer explains, “this is a flexible and scalable vehicle architecture which is optimized for a broad portfolio of electric vehicles.”

This flexibility is what makes Ultium a game changer in EV technology. The modular base can be stacked and scaled based on the vehicle design and will allow for easy maintenance over the life of the vehicle. And as we continue to advance our battery chemistry, Ultium will allow us to incorporate those improvements without significant changes to the platform.

Rivkah Saldanha: Vehicle Performance Engineer

The portfolio

We want to put everyone in an EV. Chevrolet, Buick, Cadillac and GMC will all join the electric future, with EV versions of their most popular crossovers, pickups and SUVs. And as our portfolio continues to grow, we will further expand to offer even more affordable models like the forthcoming 2024 Chevrolet Equinox EV6 which will be offered at an MSRP7 starting at around $30,000.

Achieving our all-electric future will take more than a wide range of options. That’s why vehicle performance engineers like Rivkah Saldanha are helping us reimagine the EV experience by working to optimize vehicle range without compromising performance. It is thanks to the innovative drive of employees like Rivkah that we will be able to offer vehicles like the 2024 Chevrolet Silverado EV that, with an available 400 miles of range8 and up to 10,000 lbs available towing capacity9 is breaking the boundaries of what it means to drive an electric vehicle.

From the engineers and designers who develop our vehicles and technology to the manufacturing team members who bring them to life, our employees have always been the driving force behind everything we do. As we continue our electric transformation, their adaptability, passion for innovation and commitment to delivering great consumer experiences are powering our acceleration toward a sustainable all-electric future.

Ultium is the game-changing platform driving the GM commitment to an all-electric future. It produces zero emissions and provides a quiet ride.
