Partnering with 37 other volunteer groups, General Motors employees joined the Belle Isle Spring Clean-Up to remove 1,276 pounds of litter.

As part of General Motors’ mission to extend its support into its communities, nearly 60 employees spent a recent Saturday collecting litter on Detroit’s Belle Isle. The annual Belle Isle Spring Clean-Up, coordinated by the Belle Isle Conservancy, gathers volunteer groups from across metro Detroit for a day of construction and conservation projects.

This Clean-Up highlighted the impact that trash has on waterways, marine life, animals and people on local, regional and global levels as part of the 2018 launch of the Keep Belle Isle Beautiful anti-littering campaign. Through the efforts of all participating volunteer groups, 1,276 pounds of litter were removed from Belle Isle’s waterways.

JumpStart community service lead and equipment control coordinator Kelley Wallace organized the GM volunteers, and this was the third straight year General Motors participated in the Belle Isle Spring Clean-Up.

“The goal of the JumpStart program is to acclimate new employees to GM and the communities in which we reside,” said Wallace. “Participating in an event to introduce employees to, and do good for, an iconic Detroit landmark like Belle Isle really resonates with both our new and veteran employees.”
