The GM Renaissance Center is a source of pride and inspiration for our employees, business associates, and the people of Detroit. Through its world-class design, use of technology, first-class hotel, and highly regarded retail tenants, this facility creates an exciting environment with a global character.
In 1996, General Motors acquired the Renaissance Center to house its world headquarters on Detroit’s riverfront, a milestone that helped spark a downtown renaissance and enhance public spaces along the Detroit River.
The General Motors Global Technical Center is globally recognized as the preeminent innovation center for automotive engineering, design, and advanced technology.
The GM Design Auditorium (aka, the “Dome”) is one of the most recognizable aspects of the Technical Center campus. Designed by renowned architect Eero Saarinen, it is ideal for conducting product reviews under many different lighting conditions. The adjacent patio, featuring several turntables, is a helpful alternative for viewing vehicles in daylight. Nearly every GM vehicle developed since 1956 has been evaluated in this space. In 2018, the GM Design Auditorium was awarded the Commercial Design Award of Excellence for its restoration. The renovation sought to modernize the presentation and evaluation space using the latest technology and more sustainable solutions, while remaining consistent with the original design intent.
