Our Commitment to STEM Education
Supporting a diverse talent pipeline.
Supporting a diverse talent pipeline.
GM is inspiring the next generation of big thinkers by supporting STEM education for all.
A common thread among our engineering
employees is a passion for STEM subjects
throughout childhood. That’s why GM works with
nonprofit organizations and communities across
the country to provide investments that enable
immersive, hands-on learning experiences in
science, technology, engineering and math fields.
General Motors believes that achieving an all-electric
future and leading an equitable and
inclusive transition to a net-zero carbon future can
only be achieved through embracing and investing
in diverse perspectives and talent.
As we embark toward this vision, diverse STEM talent with varied backgrounds, skillsets and experiences will be needed to help create, innovate, and inspire at GM and across the industry.
But access to STEM is not always equitable. In 2017, the National ScienceFoundation reported that underrepresented communities made up just a fraction of STEM professionals and students. We aim to help decrease this disparity by focusing on providing innovative programs to communities that historically have not had access.
Through our partnerships, we’re equipping educators with the skills and confidence to effectively teach STEM curriculum.
DonorsChoose Our collaboration with DonorsChoose encourages STEM learning by funding the projects of teachers who are looking to bring more STEM curriculum into their classrooms. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, teachers had to invent ways to introduce and maintain students’ STEM skills by providing innovative resources, like our Electrifying Engineering series, directly to their classrooms.
International Society for Technology in Education
GM and the International Society for Technology in Education created a professional development training program for educators on artificial intelligence in the classroom. This program has helped hundreds of educators understand the importance, excitement and entry points of AI topics in education. We’ve also created guidebooks with critical AI lessons that are accessible to teachers across the world and published in Spanish, Arabic and English.
Investment in immersive, hands-on STEM learning in college classrooms, clubs and programs provides students with foundational experience to begin their professional careers.
AutoDrive
The Society of Automotive Engineers and GM work with students across the country as part of the AutoDrive Challenge™. The four-year competition is designed to integrate software and hardware into a Chevrolet Bolt EV, with the technical goal of navigating an urban driving course in an automated driving mode as described by SAE J3016 levels of driving automation.
Advanced Vehicle Technology Competition
The Advanced Vehicle Technology Competition series’ latest effort, EcoCAR Mobility Challenge, continues more than 15 consecutive years of teaming up with the U.S. Department of Energy to provide a real-world, hands-on automotive training ground for students across North America. Student teams follow a multi-year vehicle development process to design, integrate and refine vehicles into reliable, energy-efficient mobility systems. GM provides each team with a Chevrolet Blazer, in addition to extensive mentorship, funding and opportunities to compete at our proving grounds in Michigan and Arizona.
Museum of Science
Our work with the Go Carbon Neutral Challenge supports undergraduate students currently enrolled at accredited New England, North Carolina or Bay Area colleges. Students have the opportunity to submit solutions to transportation challenges that can help aid in a transition to a net-zero carbon future.
MIT Solve
Since 2018, GM and Solve — an initiative of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology — have been working together to help connect and engage with innovators and scale their cutting-edge solutions to help solve the world’s challenges.
Bringing GM’s expertise directly to the classroom or into afterschool learning programs gives GM a unique opportunity to help bring equitable access to STEM education, infusing it with the current and future skills needed in the job market.
AI4ALL
AI4ALL immerses youth and college students in hands-on AI education, mentorship by top AI practitioners and supportive peer networks at universities around North America with the goal of training the future generation of AI leaders. GM collaborated with AI4ALL on an immersive summer learning program in Michigan that aims to help students create presence and persistence in AI careers.
Ashoka
GM and Ashoka have teamed up for the past two years to support students using STEM skills to improve sustainability challenges in their schools, neighborhoods and communities. One STEM for Changemaking Challenge winner developed HydroAlert, an innovative flood warning system using ultrasonic sensors, IoT devices, the cloud and mobile technologies.
Benetech
GM has collaborated with Benetech to make STEM education more inclusive and accessible to millions of students with disabilities. Benetech’s software solutions, such as AI that transforms STEM books into accessible formats at scale and an accessible online math editor, make it easier for students with disabilities to read and learn STEM content.
Girl Scouts
Female students’ achievement in math and science is on par with their male peers; however, women make up only 28 percent of the science and engineering workforce.
GM’s new Automotive Engineer Badges will leverage immersive learning, computational thinking and the digitization of education to help ensure the next generation of female leaders across the U.S. has an opportunity to explore STEM and automotive careers.
