We are committed to the safe deployment of current and future advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), and we believe part of this is helping drivers understand how to properly use them.

This focus is centered on a few key areas:

A commitment to testing and validation

Integrating a comprehensive set of sensor technologies

Ensuring hands-free technology has driver attention systems, when appropriate

Monitoring roads and working with the public sector

Educating consumers and other stakeholders

Safe-Deployment

Quick Tips to Start Going Hands-Free with Super Cruise:

Education and training are key to creating comfort and confidence in ADAS. These resources can help give you the tools you need to embrace hands-free driver assistance technology and get the most out of Super Cruise.

  1. Carefully read the user manual for your system and understand how the system works before engaging it.
  2. Ask your dealer to walk you through the technology.
  3. Initiate it on compatible roads with minimal traffic for the first few uses.
  4. Hands-free driving still requires the driver to stay alert because the driver is responsible for the vehicle, which is why drivers can be Hands-Free, Eyes On. Remember to stay SAFE when going hands-free.

How to Engage the Super Cruise System

Engaging the system is simple:

STEPS:

  1. To use Super Cruise, Adaptive Cruise Control must be on. Press the Adaptive Cruise Control button on the steering wheel to turn the system on.
  2. When Super Cruise detects you are on a compatible road, paying sufficient attention and all other driving conditions necessary for the feature to function are met (e.g., lane markings visible, GPS available, no system faults), the Super Cruise symbol illuminates in white on the instrument cluster. On some models, you must center your vehicle in the lane before the icon will turn white.
  3. When it is safe to do so, press the Super Cruise button on the steering wheel to engage Super Cruise. When the symbol and the steering wheel light bar illuminate in green, you may remove your hands from the steering wheel. You should not remove your hands from the steering wheel unless the light bar is green, indicating Super Cruise is steering the vehicle. On properly equipped vehicles, when all other driving conditions are met but you are not centered in your lane, the Super Cruise symbol will light up blue until you are centered in your lane.
  4. If an Adaptive Cruise Control speed was not previously set, Super Cruise will set your current speed as the cruise speed.

ADAS and safe deployment

People are still wary of a future where the vehicle performs some or all of the driving tasks through automated driving features. To best increase understanding, and confidence in ADAS, we want to share helpful information in a central location for those curious about these technologies.

Consumers can access advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) on their vehicles today. Our hands-free ADAS, Super Cruise is a great example.  Fully autonomous vehicles, however, are available only as a ridehail vehicle in select cities through companies like Cruise. With ADAS, the driver is ultimately responsible. That means their eyes need to be on the road, even when their hands are free.

An example of a hands-free system is GM’s Super Cruise. And an example of a fully autonomous system can be seen through our work with Cruise.

With Super Cruise, the Driver Attention System inside the vehicle tracks the driver’s head position and/or the driver’s gaze, and alerts the driver to pay close attention to the road and take control when needed. The driver attention system has a robust series of escalations, visual, haptic and audio, to alert the driver in the event that they need to take control. If the driver does not respond to a series of alerts, we bring the vehicle to a safe, controlled stop, turn the hazard lights on and call OnStar for help.

Super Cruise technology works with Adaptive Cruise Control1, which can control acceleration and braking while it is enabled and operating to maintain a driver-selected following gap. Super Cruise functions with the vehicle’s OnStar Connected Services and uses real-time cameras, sensors, GPS and LiDAR map data to help detect curves, helping to make long drives and commutes more comfortable. Always refer to the vehicle’s owner manual2.

1 Always pay attention while driving and when using Super Cruise. Do not use a hand-held device. Requires active Super Cruise plan or trial. Terms apply. Visit cadillacsupercruise.comchevysupercruise.com, or gmc.com/connectivity-technology/super-cruise for compatible roads and full details. Automatic Lane Change and Lane Change on Demand are not available while trailering.

Safety or driver-assistance features are no substitute for the driver’s responsibility to operate the vehicle in a safe manner. The driver should remain attentive to traffic, surroundings and road conditions at all times. Visibility, weather and road conditions may affect feature performance. Read the vehicle Owner’s Manual for more important feature limitations and information.
