We are committed to the safe deployment of current and future advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), and we believe part of this is helping drivers understand how to properly use them.
Education and training are key to creating comfort and confidence in ADAS. These resources can help give you the tools you need to embrace hands-free driver assistance technology and get the most out of Super Cruise.
People are still wary of a future where the vehicle performs some or all of the driving tasks through automated driving features. To best increase understanding, and confidence in ADAS, we want to share helpful information in a central location for those curious about these technologies.
Consumers can access advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) on their vehicles today. Our hands-free ADAS, Super Cruise is a great example. Fully autonomous vehicles, however, are available only as a ridehail vehicle in select cities through companies like Cruise. With ADAS, the driver is ultimately responsible. That means their eyes need to be on the road, even when their hands are free.
An example of a hands-free system is GM’s Super Cruise. And an example of a fully autonomous system can be seen through our work with Cruise.
With Super Cruise, the Driver Attention System inside the vehicle tracks the driver’s head position and/or the driver’s gaze, and alerts the driver to pay close attention to the road and take control when needed. The driver attention system has a robust series of escalations, visual, haptic and audio, to alert the driver in the event that they need to take control. If the driver does not respond to a series of alerts, we bring the vehicle to a safe, controlled stop, turn the hazard lights on and call OnStar for help.
Super Cruise technology works with Adaptive Cruise Control1, which can control acceleration and braking while it is enabled and operating to maintain a driver-selected following gap. Super Cruise functions with the vehicle’s OnStar Connected Services and uses real-time cameras, sensors, GPS and LiDAR map data to help detect curves, helping to make long drives and commutes more comfortable. Always refer to the vehicle’s owner manual2.
1 Always pay attention while driving and when using Super Cruise. Do not use a hand-held device. Requires active Super Cruise plan or trial. Terms apply. Visit cadillacsupercruise.com, chevysupercruise.com, or gmc.com/connectivity-technology/super-cruise for compatible roads and full details. Automatic Lane Change and Lane Change on Demand are not available while trailering.
2 Safety or driver-assistance features are no substitute for the driver’s responsibility to operate the vehicle in a safe manner. The driver should remain attentive to traffic, surroundings and road conditions at all times. Visibility, weather and road conditions may affect feature performance. Read the vehicle Owner’s Manual for more important feature limitations and information.
